The Texas Taliban

Hyperbole.

Texas’s new law banning abortions after six weeks is basically a win for the Taliban, according to overexcited pro-abortion zealots.

Give them this much: At least they’re not comparing it to the Third Reich. They’ve at least tried a different (false) comparison.

Texas’s new pro-life statute, which Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott signed into law in May, took effect this week after the Supreme Court declined to act on an emergency appeal to block the enforcement of the measure.

The law, S.B. 8, prevents medical workers from performing or inducing abortions if they have "detected a fetal heartbeat for the unborn child" but provides exemptions related to medical emergencies.

It also allows people to file civil lawsuits against anyone who provides abortions or "aids or abets" them after the detection of a heartbeat, the Washington Examiner’s Kaelan Deese explains. A lawsuit filed under this pretense can yield at least $10,000 in "statutory damages" per abortion.

After the bill went into effect Wednesday, pro-abortion lefties responded with grief, anguish, and anger.

Abbott and the Texas state Legislature have made it harder for women to abort their children! This is a travesty! This is a nightmare! This is just like the Taliban!

“Twenty years ago,” said ,” MSNBC contributor Anand Giridharadas, “a Texas president began a war in the name of spreading freedom and defending women in faraway places, diverting untold money and energy from nation-building at home, and in the very week that lost war ends, his home state births a Taliban-worthy abortion law.”

Elsewhere at MSNBC, Joy Reid, the cable network’s dimmest bulb, said, “This is Talibanism. Are Texas conservatives going to be spying on women of childbearing age and turning them in for bounties?”

Ryan Grim, chief of the Intercept’s Washington, D.C., bureau, noted bitterly of the Texas law, “Big week for the Taliban, racking up [wins] all over the place.”

“As Americans, we have always fought for women’s rights in Afghanistan,” former California Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer said. “But we must look into the Texas mirror where GOP Texas has criminalized a woman’s right to her own decisions. Maybe we should call the Republican Party there ‘the Texas Taliban.’”

Then, of course, there’s disgraced former newsman Dan Rather, who has rebranded as a social media “influencer” years after he was drummed out of the news business for attempting to sway a presidential election with fake news. (It’s every bit as pitiful as one would expect from an 84-year-old man.)

“It’s worth noting that many of the same people attacking the Biden administration for leaving women’s rights behind in Afghanistan are eager to control women’s bodies and choices in the United States,” Rather said.

The “American Taliban.” I’m getting flashbacks to the Tea Party years.

Meanwhile, President Joe Biden condemned the Texas law Wednesday, reaffirming his commitment to protecting and defending Roe v. Wade. Because he's a devout Roman Catholic, remember?

“This extreme Texas law blatantly violates the constitutional right established under Roe v. Wade and upheld as precedent for nearly half a century,” the president said in a statement.

He added, “My administration is deeply committed to the constitutional right established in Roe v. Wade nearly five decades ago and will protect and defend that right.”

This statement seems like bad news for the pro-abortion Left.
